The Map of Isla Pasaje

“There is no name of this island noted on the map. Are you sure this is Isla Pasaje?” asked Koonts.

“I have been past it myself more than once,” said Walker as he continued his study. “I am sure it is correct. Let us see. It says to begin at Playa del Norte. That is North Beach, if my Spanish serves me.”

Gorman agreed by nodding his head and pointed to the map. “We then head south, just past the Colinas al Oeste, the western hills, then search for the cascada, the waterfall.”

He continued tracing his finger along the dotted line that was drawn on the map, translating as he went. “Next, we skirt this large salt pool, pascina agua salobra, then past this area, called Roca de Pastel de Cumpleaños.”

“Birthday Cake Rock,” said the captain, translating for all to hear.

“Indeed,” continued Gorman. “We then pass due east, toward this area of green grass, then through bushes and small trees to the Playa en forma de Corazon—the heart-shaped beach.”

“Yes,” said the captain. “However, it is a little mysterious at the last step here, Gorman. ‘Mire hacia el sur en el amarillo sol y ver el craneo y el premio.’”

“Look toward the south in the yellow sun, and see the skull and the prize,” said Gorman. “I agree, Captain, though it is quite clear that one of the smaller islands on the southern coast is Skull Eye Island, where the treasure lies. We will need to decipher what that really means when we arrive.”

“Why start at the north beach?” asked Koonts. “We could drop off a party at the southeastern tip, right where the directions end. It would save time, and it is clearly written on the map as you say.”

“There are so many small islands off the southern coast—many more than are shown here,” said the captain, pointing at the area on the map. “Some might not be easily identified. No, we will need to follow the directions, starting from the northern beach and traveling through the interior to make sure we find the exact island that holds the treasure.”

“I should keep the map on my person,” asked Gorman, “as I assume I will lead the team?”

“Yes, yes, by all means,” said Walker, now somewhat relaxing and sitting back in his chair. “It seems to me that you men did a fine job, obtaining the map and dispatching a few spies along the way. Gorman, a capital plan you had. Marvelous. I shall recommend you for promotion and honors, no doubt.”

“Thank you, Captain. Quite unnecessary, but I thank you. I am exactly where I need to be. And besides, Moore and Flagon did all the difficult work. The boys are top-notch, if I may say so, sir.”

“’Tis true,” said Walker. “I will note it in my letters.”

Just then, Harrison and Langley entered the captain’s cabin and saluted smartly.

“Report!” said Captain Walker.

“The men are at the guns, sir,” said Harrison. “Marines in the tops. It will be plenty rough
